Green Gremlin – AMC

Any resident of Los Angeles knows one of the most basic, unflinching rule in this city. You are nobody if you don’t have a car. I got this message loud and clear when my bus riding single mother moved us to Pasadena. Her first car was a used AMC Gremlin. A compact piece of green crap!  Then my mother began her decades long love affair with VW Rabbits almost always beige. I was thrilled when one of them had a sunroof! She stayed with Rabbits until 2000. All of them used and running on diesel, of course.

Guess what? I was a nobody for years. Color me poor quasi-adult! I was a bus rider and ashamed. When I went bar hopping, I treated myself to a taxi. My first car was a joke. A Franken-mobile made up of numerous car parts. It had a manual transmission and I didn’t drive stick. Not my thing.

Then I got my Ford Escort and she took care of me for 8 years. Her engine gave out and I was heartbroken.  The junk man towed her away. I actually told him to take care of her! Now I have my 2003 Dodge Neon. It’s paid off, runs ok and the paint is peeling (no garage).  I don’t love it, but so what?

Do I care what impression my car leaves ? I’m 44 years-old. I have nothing to prove to anyone! Okay, I care just a tiny little bit.  I live in L.A. How can I not care? And …. screw you if you don’t like my car!  It’s paid off!

I’m 49 and I don’t know when it happened, but I love the day when I finally stopped giving a damn of people think. I go down to the beach a lot to get exercise and I wear an ugly, floppy hat to protect myself from the sun. It’s something I wouldn’t have dared worn a few years ago.

I currently do not have a license or a car so it’s the bus for me. Fortunately I’m on a pretty busy route, but Los Angeles is severely lacking in public transportation.

You’re not kidding, buddy! Public transportation was bad when I was on it and they’re pushing rail lines a lot more than bus service. Anyway, this L.A. girl will never judge you. Wear that floppy hat and screw them all.
