The Sanctity Of Marriage, Really?

I’m on a self-righteous kick today. So please, indulge me a bit. I hear a lot of right-wing politicians talk about the sanctity of marriage. Sounds great when you say it.

This ideology is reserved for heterosexual couples only. Now, Webster defines the word sanctity as  1) holiness of life and character, 2) the quality or state of being holy or sacred .

Where is the holiness of life and character when go to a drive-thru in Las Vegas in a party dress and booze on your breath? And where is it in a seemingly lovely and loveless arraigned marriage?

Where is the holiness of life and character in wife beatings, child abuse, alcoholism, abandonment? These things happen in ‘traditional’ marriages, people!

There are even TV shows like Bridezilla that have consenting brides verbally and sometimes physically abusing members of the wedding party and groom. What is holy or sacred about that?

My dear sweet mother-in-law told me about a very expensive (cost over 6 figures) wedding she attended where the bride took scissors to her bridesmaids’ dresses just before the ceremony.

That marriage lasted less than a year. Marriage and weddings are only sacred if all you care about is loving and belonging to your gay or straight spouse.

How the best man’s hair looks is irrelevant. Who cares if the limo is late? Why are you having a meltdown because your bridesmaid painted her nails different from everybody else?

If your car engine is on fire, why would you complain about the puncture in your tire? Get your priorities straight, people! Not everyone is meant to be married.

Imagine your beloved crippled, maimed, depressed, unwilling to make love and unemployed. Would you stay with him or her? Be honest. If the answer is yes, then you should be married.

Too many selfish, self-centered, thoughtless and immature people take a stroll down the aisle. Do the world a favor and stay home, work your ass off and grow the hell up first.

Right on! All reasons why I’ll never get married (probably) — I’ll never grow up! Either that, or because I’m on a self-righteous kick EVERY day! Good post coco

Are you sure? A good marriage isn’t always 50/50. Sometimes its 80/20. Both people have to work at it, fail and work at it some more. In between, you have to be loving, respectful and honest. Not everyone can do that.

  5. Love the post. Marriage is a permanent committment through everything good, challenging, crazy, tiring, demanding, selfless, selfish and bad times etc. Seriously, take the time to consider what it really means and if your ready for the responisbilty. Oh, did I mention it’s worth it when done right! Again, great post.
